Educated as a Political Scientist and as a Social Sciences researcher, I decided after two years of working in an academic setting that I wanted to pursue a creative career.
I was a research associate and junior lecturer at the Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. My research focused on public opinion, polarisation, the spread of misinformation, conspiracy theories and conspiracy beliefs, and trust in media. I taught courses in communication science (BSc and MSc), as well as in the Research Master Program Social Sciences for a Digital Society. During this time, I spent many nights learning about filmmaking, something I had gained much interest in after doing a Summer School in Visual Ethnography in 2023.
I now regularly work as a filmmaker in various roles, from concept development, to production, to post-production. Whatever the project is, I always try to find the deeper layer of what the story, setting and characters are about. For me, the visual should speak for itself, rather than over-reliance on explanation or exposition. Filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and finding a common language with people I work with is something I enjoy, and something I believe is essential, besides having the right ideas and technical knowledge. My background in the social sciences taught me to always question why something is societally relevant first, and I bring this with me in my current work, whenever possible.
As a photographer, I love shooting, developing and scanning my own film photos. I like to shoot many things in my free time, but also love to apply my knowledge in clients’ projects. Have a look at my Gallery, if you want!
